About 20 years ago, Google announced 'Google Webmaster Guidelines' for all site owners & SEO experts, which gave an overview of best practices for building a site.
FYI Webmaster Guidelines has been the go-to resource for SEO best practices in Google Search for the past two decades. Changing the name and updating the data resources has been a big deal for several SEO activities.
Google has replaced the Google Webmaster Guidelines with the Google Search Essentials. The name change is Google's ongoing efforts to remove the term "webmaster" so that these tools and documentation do not narrow the focus to just "Webmaster" but expands it to publishers, site owners, developers, creators, and so on. Even after making make updates time-to-time to old Google Webmaster Guidelines, Google decided it was time for a significant refresh, so Google renamed the Webmaster Guidelines with Google Search Essentials.
What changes have been made in Google Webmaster Guidelines?
- Technical requirements: It is a new section to help people understand how to publish content in a format that Google can index and access.
- Spam policies:- Within the Spam Policies section, Google has updated its guidance for the Google Search policies against spam. It covers common forms of spam & behavior that could lead to a site ranking lower or not appearing in Google web search results.
- Key best practices: Google published new guidance with the best practices that people can consider when creating sites to create content that serves people and will help a site be more easily searched & found, in Google Search Results.
